2016: Year In Review

Oy vey, 2016.  A particularly challenging year for me personally.  Found myself diving into a heap of projects purely as a matter of survival.  That did give me the ability to put up 35 videos on Youtube(!?).  Hope to continue those as time allows.

Here's to 2017.

Coffee-time doodle

Alrighty then.  Personal awfulness and chaotic stress and panic just built-in to this year. (yay!).  Today: car rear-ended, phone broken, friend's son in the hospital, 2 friends in-process for awful divorces, game night cut short(I'm being a crybaby about that one, I know).

GODDAMMIT.

I, and several people I know, could really use a fucking win.  I am full of complaint; my apologies.

Crap

As some things continue to be awful, at least I can paint awkward fake-retro illustrations!  HUZZAH!

Full Moon #46: Bakko Yokaiden Kibakichi 2

Miki Tanaka as Anju the wolf girl in "Bakko Yokaiden Kibakichi 2", 2004.

Yes, her hair is actually that big.

Fallout: Australis concept work

My art style has never really qualified as "fast" and/or "loose", but that's what I was trying to channel here.  Maybe 3 or 4 hours total, working as fast I was able.  Plenty that's awful or ineffective, but there are bits of this I quite like.
Fallout: Australis is still a thing in the back of my head...bolstered by Mad Max, it keeps reappearing.  Mad Max, but with ghouls and an invading Imperial Robot Army.   And plasma rifles.

Experiments

I know very little about skintones/color theory, etc. Experimenting to try and figure some things out.

Also a leisurely reprieve whilst trying to recover from a pinched nerve (resulting in shooting pain the length of my dominant arm.

T-Shirt-stravaganza!

Workin' on some shirts as I get geared up for GenCon 2016. Nerdery ahoy!

SleepyOni: Illustration! Oil Paint and a Skull

Ha ha ha. I don't know how to use oil paint AT ALL. Never tried it before, so a fact-finding mission was undertaken. Mixed results, but certainly not all bad.

revamping some stuff

Working on revamping some older things, to put on some tshirts. I'm really weird about how shirts fit me, so once I find something I like I buy several. In this case, black tshirts that i'm stenciling/printing my own art onto. At gencon this year I want to be representing my own peculiar sensibilities, not anyone else's product.

Preview detail

It's totally a thing to paint Buddy Hackett as The Mole Man, right?  I mean, ALL the kids are doing it.
Detail of a poster illo that gets presented next week, including youtube build video.  Small # of prints made, 11x17, will probably go up on my etsy page next week.
Prints arrived 5 days early(!), so the vid is finished way early.

Paperback cover & book. For fun.

Made a little paperback and cover in the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style.  100 pages, filled up with scans of a bunch of stuff from my sketchbooks as well as more recent digital work.  Printed out masters of the interior pages at home, then copied those double-sided pages at the local copy place, with decidedly mixed results.  Oh well.  Original cover painting & layout, printed onto cardstock and the whole thing perfect-bound and trimmed.  4.25 x 6.75", roughly.
...and a build video on youtube on the SleepyOni channel.

Youtube? Youtube.

I'm putting some stuff on Youtube under SleepyOni.  Playing around with video as distraction from real-world shit.

Reprieve

Ernest Borgnine in "The Devil's Rain", 1975.  Consider this a temporary Full Moon Reprieve. Because, you know, Easter's coming up.

skulls

I was going through my last couple sketch-and-note-books, and realized that I, ummm, I draw a lot of skulls.   Weird.

Full Moon #44: El Charro De Las Calaveras

Full Moon #42: Frankenstein, El Vampiro Y Compania

Wolfman from "Frankenstein, El Vampiro Y Compania", 1962.
Holds a special place in my heart due to the wolfman mask being constructed out of cardboard and cotton balls.  No actual attempt at makeup was made for this film, and I find that kind of endearing.

Full Moon #41: House Of Frankenstein

Kinda got lost in the weeds on this one.

Full Moon #35: El Santo Y Blue Demon Contra Dracula Y El Hombre Lobo

Yet another El Hombre Lobo, this time from "El Santo Y Blue Demon Contra Dracula Y El Hombre Lobo", 1973.
Notable for the sparse chest hair and yellow satin shirt.

Full Moon #33:Stephen King's It

Teenage Wolfman from "Stephen King's It", 1990.

This tv miniseries had the additional problem of at least 2 different creature builds for their wolfman.  One close-up(animatronic, if I remember right), and one full-head makeup for the long and medium shots.  The actual makeup was great(may have just been a static full-head mask), but I wasn't able to get a decent shot of it.  The illo is based on the close-up head...which bears a peculiar resemblance to Willem Dafoe(?)

Full Moon #32: El Santo Y Blue Demon Contra Los Monstruos

El Hombre Lobo from "El Santo Y Blue Demon Contra Los Monstruos", 1969.
The film also features one of the most awkwardly dodgy cyclops i've seen in some time.

Goofin' off

So, I finished another paying gig a week or two ago.  October-January was INSANE for me, and my recharge plan is essentially "Play Fallout 4 until collapse.  Wake up and repeat."  It's worked, kinda.

These two are both quick(ish), messy sketches from ref photo's.  Drawn whilst watching the new X-Files & hanging out with my family.  Seems that I'm always jumping between work methods; whole bunch of digital, go straight to pencil/pen/whatever.  Too much drawing, go make something in the workshop.  Too many handmade books, go write something.
I'm pretty lucky that I have the space/time/ability to jump between some fairly disparate stuff, as the mood hits.  One more, that is not 40s/50s:

Also building a Fallout 4-related item.  Will update after I get some problems solved.
