Monster Women: #4

Monster Women magazine proudly presents: Miss Argentina!
So this is the painting that actually started this madness in earnest.  Started it...2 years ago?  Man, I have GOT to work on my follow-through.  Overworked this to hell and back, so I'm calling it done.

MonsterWomenMagazine: September '64

So THIS is what I've been working on.  Monster Women Magazine, the great forgotten (or non-existant) pinup mag of the last century.  I love me some monsters.  Likewise pinup and retro magazine covers.  Also to be a sketchbook adornment.   It all started coming together once I concocted a fake Sleepy Oni Publishing logo, curiously enough.

Finalised. -ish.

Done-ish.  Changed the title to Planet tales since the previous title, while out of copyright, is attached to a new reprint project with a new tagline.  Soon as I finish a couple other rough images, will be sending 'em off to be fabric-printed and attached to some sketchbooks.  Trying a new production method this time.  We'll see how it goes.

Finally close to done.  For impending sketchbook-cover madness.  Sketchbook Pro, Artrage, ancient PS.

2012: A Retrospective

So there we go.  That's my "finished" output of 2012, including a couple pieces that I haven't posted before (either because they were personal or were for a project that hasn't released).
I am strangely ambivalent about these.  35 pieces over a year, a bunch of them just doodles.  Some with HOURS AND HOURS logged.  35 pieces.  Just under 3 a month, then.  I think I can do better.
Like many a hobbyist, my finishing details are getting a lot better.  But the fundamentals are still really weak; back to work!

As comedy, here's the partial of the projects I spent a lot of time on this last year and still haven't finished:
As stated:  back to work!

Monster Women: #3

Monster Women Magazine presents Lily Munster, styled for a night at the beach.

Yeah, these are still ongoing.  Only seven more to go. *gulp*

Fallout-style Japanese robot

Early concept piece for this crazy idea i had.  I have some ideas for the body style, but wanted to get something down now.  This is based on a wacked-out diecast toy from the 50's.  Symbol on the head is the Mon of the Shogun, symbol on chest is the Mon of the particular warlord(actually, it's a current logo for a japanese prefecture.)  This'll have a huge torso and arms for intimidation factor, built on a hover chassis.
I am such a nerd.

Full Nerd

So i got the request to do a "severe businesswoman" drawing for game night.  Game was cancelled, so i drew instead.  The other one is of this character our crew ran into, Oni-chan.  Oni-chan is not long for our game world, he just doesn't realize it yet.  But i wanted to see if i could translate oni-style facial deformations onto something more realistic.  Meh.

Monster Women: #2

Monster Women Magazine presents the lovely Weena, from the George Pal film The Time Machine, released in 1960.  Weena's one of the Eloi, the light-on-smarts but lovely successors to humanity.  ArtRage, minimal Photoshop, drawn on two different tablets.  I've figured out a bit regarding the software, which is most helpful.  Use of color remains...problematic.
As a side note, now I really want to make a plush morlock.  Dammit.

Monster Women : #1

Monster Women Magazine Presents:  Miss Lucy Westenra, with her pet wolf D.  Been working on this for far too long, finally just calling it.  I get obsessive about...well, everything in an image, so I'm forcing myself to let it go.  Started this about a year ago.  Sheesh.

Started with SketchbookPro, moved to ArtRage, then back'n forth betwixt ArtRage and PS.  Some work on the tablet, some on the main machine.  Full-size is around 13" high, 400 dpi.  I've been making these pretty big (i have various future plans, all of them nefarious).

Obviously, HEAVILY influenced by old pinups, specifically Elvgren.

7-16-12

Sometimes I have to do a quick(ish) drawing/painting to remind myself that I'm not a complete artistic washout.  This was a couple hours in front of the tv, all in sketchbook pro, on the tablet.  From ref, as usual.  Yes, her eyes and jaw are still wonky.

late-night sketchin'

More cartoon stuff.  Been really busy this month, despite not posting a damn thing.  This was a quick midnight attempt to do something completely different from the book cover I'm working on, which is kicking my ass.   Huzzah!

I've got lots of pieces in the works, but not a one complete yet.

practice

In Artrage, just a bit over an hour on the tablet.  From ref, as always.  Trying to decipher color continues.

Donny Vomit...finished.

...and I'm done.  Feels weird to say this, but I really like this one.  This may actually be my favorite thing i've ever done.  (that could just be the flush-with-victory-endorphin-rush, though)

Donny Vomit

Pretty pleased with this one, thus far at least.  2 & 1/2 hours or so.  Working from a spectacular photo, as always.
For anyone who hasn't heard me raving 'bout 'em, Donny Vomit is the emcee for the Pretty Things Peepshow.  Burlesque and sideshow, absurdly entertaining.

spent a little more time on it.  But just a little.  Did switch to the tablet & ArtRage, though.
