Although I do feel as though I'm at least starting to get the hang of it.

Experiment
So, apparently the only way my brain can wrap itself around color & whatnot, is by ignoring what it thinks it knows. In the interests of finding how I actually want to paint, have been doing weird "ignore the proper colors" experiments. Meh.
Crap, just realized that this gal has an enormous neck. oops. Well, it's late. And extra tired from an exhausting, crappy day at work. Retail@the Holidays = Ass.

Sketchbookin' 2
That's right, it's another mummy. And an octopus. For someone who loves the work of HPL as much as I do, it's rather ironic that I find tentacles extremely difficult to draw. But mummies - mummies are easy. I tried to split the difference by drawing from a photo of a dead, formaldehyde-preserved octopus. Meh, coulda been worse.
Gunnar Olof Hylten-Cavallius (and me)
Gunnar Olof Hylten-Cavallius was a Swedish folklorist(among other things) in the 19th century. And his beard was awesome. I work at a bookstore. And am less-magnificently bearded.
Sketchbookin'
Alright, this is some new sketches, alongside months-old crap. Apologize for the weird greyshift across the images - it was a strange lighting day. Photo'd from current sketchbook. Top one is proof that there's no otherwise-okay drawing that I can't screw up with poorly rendered tattoos. Second is a character study for the script I wrote in the spring. No, it's not necessarily dead, just a couple rounds of rewrites and a veritable shit-ton of prep work ahead. The other two are just more sketches, from reference.

Nerd Night drawings
The better drawings from the NPC stack for nerd night. Running a one-shot involving Nazi SuperScience and...well, nerdery. Did about 10 other drawings, most of which are complete and utter sketchbook trash. But these, I actually like.
All digital, from various references.

Craftwork-A-Go-Go
So, I've been working on this off'n on for months. The Alien Blaster from Fallout 3. Everything cheezy and fun about 1950's scifi design shows up on this thing. Great curve, fins, radiator discs on the barrel; I love it. So of course I have to make one. Took a bunch of really bad camphone shots from the game (straight off my tv, no less), had the blaster next to a pack of cigarettes(in-game, at least). From there extrapolated the "real world" dimensions. Roughly.
Lathed some rounded shapes outta foam, cast those in Apoxyscult, sanded like crazy.
Laminated some plastic sheet together for the flat shapes. Was on attempt #2 of the barrel when I discovered much better shots online, realized my basic design was pretty far off. So, I'm on to attempt #3.
But that's fine. As with all this crap, the problem-solving process is what I really enjoy. Strategizing how exactly to accomplish something. And it's always nice to actually be building something, after so much digital work.
I've also got this in the works; for a Shadowrun game where we're all playing cops in 2040 Seattle. Immediately after the Night of Rage, if anyone's familiar with SR. 'Cuz really, how could we play a cop game without poorly crafted plastic badges?

new stuff
So having lost July to 'too-many-projects-i'm-to-stressed-can't-decide', and the bulk of August to an existential funk, I'm finally forcing myself back to doing something creative. We had a project we were prepping for that has(to date, at least) not moved forward whatsoever. Had a bunch of things I didn't want to get engrossed in, not wanting to be distracted from said currently non-existant project. So. This is a couple hours in, and is the first remotely creative thing I've done in weeks.
Damn you, existential funk!

SciptFrenzy2010: Accomplished!
Screencap from the confirmation page. Due to the idiosyncratic nature of the software I was using, when I uploaded a PDF to verify my page count with ScriptFrenzy, it was counted as much higher than it was. I only wrote 113 pages of script, not 150. But still, despite how much I hate it and think it's complete and utter SHITE(right now, anyway)...that's one-hundred-and-thirteen pages more than I had written a month ago. I think I would like to celebrate with bad tv, comfort food, and/or videogames. Huzzah!

practice, more practice
So I've been working diligently on Ye Olde Scriptfrenzy Project, and have been neglecting Ye Olde Art Shit. Been sketching at work still, just not anything with the tablet. So here's part of a practice piece, intended to keep my hand in it. Only working on this 30 minutes or so at a time, added bonus: It's a break from scriptwriting.

lightning 2/18/10 part 2
lightning 2/18/10
Okay, this took more than 1/2 an hour by a bit. Trying to incorporate more of a full range of tones, which has been a real struggle with these more painterly sketches. Blech.
